About Hawaii Kai Hotels
Hawaii Kai is a large coastal town on the island of Oahu about 10 miles (16 kilometers) east of Honolulu. Industrial magnate Henry J. Kaiser began developing the community—originally a wetland site near Hanauma Bay and Maunalua Bay—in the late 1950s.
Koko Crater is the prominent attraction of the area. From Kalanianaole Highway, visitors have views of the crater, mountains and Pacific waters. They can hike to the summit of the dormant volcano and wander through the 60-acre botanical garden maintained within its basin; of special interest is the grove of rare wiliwili trees.
Aquatic enthusiasts are drawn to the underwater marvels of Hawaii Kai. Rays, eels, sharks, turtles and countless colorful fish species abound among the reefs and ocean caves. A hub of tourist activity is the Koko Marina Center. It provides rental gear and instruction for snorkeling, scuba diving and surfing. The center also features an eight-screen cinema complex and numerous shops.
Dining options in Hawaii Kai vary from gourmet to laid-back. Visitors spend much of their time exploring the beautiful eastern end of Oahu and simply relaxing at their vacation rental, falling into the idyllic island lifestyle.
